Vanity Fair's annual Hollywood issue is one of the world's most beautiful and influential covers and a personal favourite. When I gazed upon the faces of this year's Covergirls, there's vague recognition, but many are unknown. This is not a new phenomenon - it's really the whole point of the special issue and to keep us guessing further, covers alternate between women, men and mixed covers. Vanity Fair (and Publisher Condé Nast) knows the players, the insiders and the next BIG thing before most people have ever heard of them. They are also the Publisher of Vogue, GQ and a stable of some of the most well-known media brands. >>>
_Take the 1997 Vanity Fair's Hollywood issue, a time I remember well as I was part of a team who managed the sales of this magazine in Australia. It was the 3rd Hollywood issue called The Next Wave and it featured a bevvy of beauties, some known some unknown. The Next Wave—Cameron Diaz, *Kate Winslet, Claire Danes, *Renée Zellweger, Minnie Driver, Alison Elliott, Jada Pinkett, Jennifer Lopez, *Charlize Theron, and Fairuza Balk. I remember the beauty of the cover and the faces - and I knew I should commit them to memory immediately - as they were indeed "The Next Wave". Looking back at the achievements of the Covergirls, several have taken out Academy Awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and a raft of other achievements and nominations across the globle. Who knew then that an almost unrecognisable Jennifer Lopez would go on to such acclaim including Grammy's, American Music Awards, MTV Music Awards, and even a Golden Globe nomination.
Back to this year's cover, I'm going to commit these new faces to memory as in time they too will become household names. My tip for the 2012 Academy Award for Actress in a Leading Role is Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), though it's entirely possible she may be pipped by Rooney Mara (top left) for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or even Glenn Close (they seem to award extra points for prosthetics and heavy make-up). Either way, this cover is a joy to behold. (image: www.vanityfair.com)
