Earlier this month Australia's two biggest newspaper publishers; News Limited and Fairfax Media unveiled their digital paid subscription models. Both publishers offer a $1 for the first month for full digital access and between $15 (Fairfax) and $16 (News+) thereafter. Fairfax offer everyone access to 30 free articles per month before being asked to upgrade - they also send you an alert once you've read 25 free articles which is also handy. Newspaper subscribers will also automatically receive full digital access if they have home delivery on two or more days a week. News+ offer limited (approx. 3) free access articles before being asked to upgrade. News+ also offer Fox Sports content as part of their subscription package.

T'was the night before Christmas: I found myself without a gift for a hard to buy for person. Then I remembered there’s literally a magazine for everyone. This person owns a British vintage car and I was in the market for a gift subscription to the UK’s most popular vintage car magazine. I purchased same over at isubscribe.com.au. The customer experience was great and I received a nicely designed gift voucher. Done.
What disappointed me was the delivery window between 10 and 12 weeks for a monthly magazine (this is to do with publisher cut-off dates not necessarily isubscribe). In today’s online world where I can have shoes delivered in 3 hours, this seemed especially slow. Rather than just giving the gift voucher, I reluctantly visited the shops (again) and tracked down the latest copy from the newsagent and sort of packaged it up - that would get my gift recipient started with something to read.
Even though my brain knows the behind the scenes work it takes to fulfil and deliver a magazine (even internationally) I was disappointed with a 3 month delivery window. There’s a new customer expectation out there; what customers used to “put up with” because they had few options doesn’t cut it anymore.
What are the general delivery times on magazines to Australia?
This obviously varies from publisher to publisher and site to site but here’s an indication:
Weekly 2 - 4 weeks
Monthly 4 - 6 weeks
Bi monthly 6 - 8 weeks
Quarterly 8 - 12 weeks
Overseas 10-12 weeks
How do your titles stack up? Could you improve your initial delivery times and customer experience? Mother's Day is fast approaching and unless Mum wants her gift in August time is ticking!
Update: A week or so later I received a thank you for using isubscribe I received a gift voucher from isubscribe's UK site to tastecard.co.uk which gives 50% off the food bill at over 6000 UK restaurants. While I won't be using it anytime soon, the gesture was appreciated.
